Get Rid of Those "Skeeters"!

I posted this last summer, but have had several requests for me to share it, again!
Well, summer is here and so are the bugs!  As I sat on the back porch last night to listen to the rain, I invited hubby out, too.  We loved the comfortable seats and the pitter-patter sound that  the rain made as it hit the metal gutters.
As the evening went along, even though our back porch was a relaxing place to sit, we were forced to come inside because of the mosquitoes and other bugs that gather at dusk!
Then, today, as I looked on social media, a friend had posted this mixture of simple ingredients that are supposed to keep the mosquitoes away.  I'm in!  I'd say that this is worth a try!  We don't usually buy beer, but we're going to get a couple of cans and let it go flat just to make this stuff!

P. S.  We have made this and sprayed it on our back yard with good results!

    1. I live in Melbourne and sprayed this around our front and back doors, garage, car port and outside entertaining area just before Christmas. We had a lot of mosquitoes this year. I am surprised about how well it worked, the mozzie numbers are drastically reduced and I just resprayed again this week. One word of warning dont spray on glass sliding doors and windows as it leaves a white mess everywhere which is very hard to clean ( I learnt this the hard way!) I'm happy with the result, I still see mozzies every now and again but not many at all.

  2. No one ever follows up on these types of claims. There are so many "home remedies" out there, people post them all the time, but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually tried it.

  4. What does that mean the stronger you mix the longer it lasts?

I've tried many mixes and none have worked....the skeeters, seek me out,
So I will have to hope that THIS one will work. I'll let you know.

  8. The truth is although many home remedies and oddball uses of everyday products do serve to repel mosquitoes somewhat, they don't work very effectively for very long.

  9. I tried this and was very disappointed. It does not repell mosquitoes. I can't even open my front door without being attacked.

  10. Someone told me they used this and it burned her plants. I'm sure it was the alcohol in the mouthwash so if you try it open up the mouthwash so the alcohol can evaporate too.

    1. Use the alcohol-free version of mouthwash.

  13. Does anyone know if this hams lizards, frogs or other animals?

  14. Anyone who thinks this would work is nuts. Someone is having a good laugh. Mosquitoes are attracted by what comes out of our lungs. Don't want to get bit, stop breathing! Or use DEAT, or Bug OFF, etc.

    1. LOL gargle with mouthwash for breath, beer drink for the pain, bathe in tub with Epsom salt to relax about it...but hey I love these natural home recipes, so I'm acquiring the ingredients now. Maybe it depends on the type of mosquitoes in your area??

  15. Can this spray be made with non-alcoholic beer?

  16. WOW!! I can't believe this recipe. I live in Florida next to the river. I am the kind of person that when I walk out the door it's like I have a hugh target on me for mosquito's. We put this down on the front porch and grass and have not seen a mosquito one. I sure wish I had found this recipe 5 years ago. Thank you.

    1. Table Salt (NaCL - sodium chloride) will kill plants in high concentrations, but Epson Salt (Magnesium Sulfate) has many organic uses in the garden, and has also been used as a beauty aid, and body soak for ailments, muscle aches and pains.

    2. Lee Epsom salts are actually good for the plants it won't kill them look up your info please.

  18. Does something other than beer work? My daughter and husband have celiac disease so, can not have beer. Even though it may not hurt them going on their skin we don't want to take any chances. Thanks

    1. They would have to ingest it for it to aggravate the Celiac disease.

  19. My advice is to enjoy drinking your beer and have fresh breath by gargling with the mouthwash but DONT use it for getting rid of mosquitos....it didn't work for us.

  20. I've been using this for the past year. I mainly spray it around my deck and it does keep the mosquito's at bay for me. I do spray it about once a week but the mixture lasts me all summer.

  21. I'm letting my beer sit out now. My good guess is if it works it's the mint that does it. Mint is a natural mosquito repellant. We moved into our house and it had 3 rosemary plants growing by the patio. I didn't know they were Rosemary plants nor did I know what they did. Well I dug up 2 of them and immediately started having mosquitos! So replanting those along with some lavender ASAP. In the meantime I'm going to try this.

  22. I am in the process of making this and can't get the epsom salts to dissolve in the mouthwash. Any suggestions? I have not yet added the beer.

  23. I don't know if this works, but I can tell you what does--Bounce. Bounce that you use in the dryer. Wipe it over exposed skin before going outside and hang a few sheets out of your pockets. The mosquitoes don't like it. My husband used it when he's out working in the yard and they don't bother them. I told a relative about this that was having terrible mosquito problems inside. They were having trouble sleeping. Bounce kept the mosquitoes from biting them.
